Willow’s Wisdom on the Rocks: Consciousness and awareness

Get back to the joy of riding. It is the only way to reach your full potential, but requires learning how to listen

Do you remember why you first started riding a bike? For me, it was the sense of freedom. I loved the connection to nature, and the escape from reality.

That sense of freedom was hampered quickly however, by a training plan and a racing schedule. Even though I had many great results at the races, it took me quite a while to reconnect to the freedom and joy that made me feel alive.

I learned specific ways through the years of getting in touch with that joy and having that drive me. Here are my musings and tips on some ways to let your intuition keep your riding, training and racing on the joyful side.

You ARE energy

Before I go any further, contemplate this; you are on a rock hurtling through space. Okay, now let’s continue.

Your body contains energy centers referred to as Chakras.

Many people know of the 7 Chakras, but there are actually twelve. Three above your body, 7 within, and 2 below. Our Chakras transmit and receive energy much as your computer downloads “programs” and sends email. The “e” in email stands for electronic or energetic mail. Don’t you also receive a training “program?”

Here is a great website for more information on the Chakras, and lots of free meditations to raise your vibration. I will be referring to Chakras many times throughout my next posts, but before I overwhelm you, let’s take a look at the energy center of the first Chakra.

Working with the fight or flight instinct

The first Chakra is located at the base of your spine. The first Chakra is based on primitive survival instincts. Fight. Flee. Eat. Sleep. Obey the rules of the tribe. Listen to authority. Race. Attack. Sprint. Survive.

I am asking you to think about what your first Chakra is plugged into, because that is where your energy is going. Are you plugged into the belief that there is no gain without pain? Because millions of people believe that, and if you are plugged into that belief, then you will manifest it and that is how life is going to be for you. There is a better way to access energy.

So much of human existence is focused on the horizontal energy plane. Horizontal energy is measured by what you put out, how much you do and who you can conquer. All that focus on results and outcomes is a real energy drain.

Learning to access my vertical connection has been invaluable to me. As a human and an athlete, you want to be a weaver of vertical and horizontal energies. When connected vertically to source energy, Spirit and/or your Higher Self, energy is always flowing.

Now, here is where your consciousness comes in.

Consciousness IS awareness

You are infinite consciousness having a human experience. In order to live a conscious life, you are aware in every moment. So instead of looking at a month’s worth of training and perfectly executing your rides down to the second like a robot, ask yourself, and your body, what it wants. Intuition is your birthright. Take your training plan, and add a drop of intuitive guidance for best results.

In my post last week, I talked about how to muscle test (known as kinesiology) yourself in order to challenge yourself to recognize choices which are the “highest and greatest good,” and I suggest that you incorporate this into your training.

How many times have you sat on your porch with your bike clothes on and said “I just don’t know if I have the energy for this today?” And how many times have you forced yourself to get out there and train anyway?

In those moments, ask your intuition to guide you, and test yourself to confirm. You may phrase your testing question something like this: “To perform my best at the world championships this year, is it in my highest and best good to train today?”

If you get a yes, well then, swing your leg over the bike and give it all you’ve got. If you get a no, listen. Your body never lies and learning to listen and respect its needs is a skill that many never acquire.

Being in touch with your body through consciousness practice will sometimes lead to not following your training program that is telling you to ride when you are exhausted. Take back your first Chakra power. You may find that the act of calling your spirit back will give you all the energy you need.

Learn to unplug from “group think,” stop following the “sheeple” off a cliff, and individuate. Naturally, you must train the mechanical and energy systems of the body — the muscles and so forth. But a body without life-force energy is a dead body. Pulling that life-force energy into your body will benefit your cycling, and your well-being.

The Highest Destiny Path

I used this method for the last three years of my cycling career, and it resulted in the best results. When I did not listen to my intuition, I trained myself right into a black hole. Every time.

Of course, I wanted to be a world champion, but in the end, two bronze medals were plenty for me. I aim to live my Highest Destiny, and that is a continuous journey. Ultimately everything is always coming into balance. It’s possible I was a warrior one too many times in a past life. Now may not be the time for gold medals and accolades, but for love, family and stillness within. Life is not without surprises! But within those surprises, I just keep trusting that all is unfolding as it should.

This method will not make you a world champion. Only a few people are destined to be truly great bike racers. It will however, add JOY to your cycling and your life. And isn’t that the ultimate goal of winning a bike race?

If you are destined for greatness on the bike, you will be great. Worrying about it is not necessary. If you are destined for other great things, training and bike racing will teach you many lessons that you will bring to the rest of your life.

One of the greatest gifts you can cultivate is the ability to trust yourself, your higher guidance and your body’s intuitive wisdom. When you are in the flow, you appreciate nature, download from the cosmos, love yourself, your bike and the gift that is your breath. Your breath brings the formless into form. You are spirit on a bike, in a precious and most magical body. That feeling of joy and connectedness, my friends, is why you decided to come to planet earth, and why you stay!

Willow Rockwell is a woman in transition. As a professional mountain bike racer, she won two Bronze Medals at the Mountain bike World Championships (2009, 2010) and led the World Cup in 2010 for a brief time before finally finishing second in the series. Poised to conquer the world and win an Olympic medal, she discovered she was pregnant in the Spring of 2011. She chose to devote herself to her unborn daughter and left the sport behind. During her pregnancy she wrote a memoir titled “My Wheels Gave Me Wings.” It chronicles her difficult childhood, her near self destruction, and her path to healing and self acceptance. She is now re-discovering and re-inventing herself as a mother, a wife and a goddess woman. She hopes to inspire others to heal their deepest wounds, and to re-emerge as a powerful being full of self expression. Her aim is to embrace the whole athlete — body, mind and spirit — by incorporating intuitive wisdom of the body and the bliss of following one’s Highest Destiny Path into her approach.
