What to know
Astana heads into its 14th Tour de France targeting the overall with explosive Colombian climber Miguel Ángel López, while its longtime GC rider Jakob Fuglsang heads to the Giro d’Italia. The Tour’s mountainous route and lack of a flat time trial will cater to López’s strengths, while Fuglsang’s big diesel engine is better suited for the Giro. On paper, López has what it takes to reach a grand tour podium. But this is his first Tour de France attempt, and his ability to manage the stress of the race will be put to the test. And Astana is undoubtedly weaker in 2020 with a smaller budget and fewer support riders.
Our take
López is one of the most exciting young grand tour riders in the peloton, and he has all of the physical skills to succeed on this year’s Tour route. Does he have the intellect and the temperament? We hope so.
