The 2022 UCI Road World Championships heads to Australia for the first time since Geelong in 2010, and for only the second time in the competition’s history. The racing takes place between September 18-25 with the biggest names in the sport set to compete for a number of gold medals and rainbow jerseys.
This year sees the riders head to Wollongong, a city just an hour south along the coast from Sydney.
Following last year’s shakeup of the program, this season’s competition will follow the same format with the elite individual time trials opening up the event. The younger categories follow with a the Mixed Team Relay on the Wednesday the final timed event.
A more traditional program then follows with the men’s road race closing out proceedings. For the first time, there will be a U23 category for women, but the eligible riders will have to race with the elite women to earn their prize. The decision to do this has been controversial and widely derided by the riders.
The time trials will take place on a tight and twisting course around Wollongong that will test the riders’ technical abilities. For the first time, the elite men and women will compete across the same distance of 34.2km with two laps of the circuit.
The decision to put the U23 women with the elite means that they too will ride 34.2km while the U23 men will do a slightly shorter route of 28.8km.For the road races, the elite pelotons will start in the town on Helensburgh north of Wollongong. The course will take the riders into Wollongong before sending them out around a long loop that heads over the tough Mount Keira climb, an 8.7km ascent with gradients of up to 15 percent.
The riders will then head back into town for the Wollongong circuit, which includes the Mount Ousley and Mount Pleasant climbs. The women will do six laps around the circuit while the men will do 12.
