VIDEO: Christian Vande Velde, looking for a way to win in Colorado
VAIL, Colo. (VN) – Ten miles. A vertical gain of 1,100 feet. Two completely different riders and two completely different equipment choices ended with a .58-second difference between Levi Leipheimer (RadioShack) and Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Cervélo). The two Americans sit atop the GC after the third stage on Vail Pass, but how exactly did such different circumstances lead to such a narrow stage win for the former?
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (VN) — There haven’t been many instances during his 15-year career that Christian Vande Velde has ridden a downhill prologue — and even fewer times that he’s started off a time trial stage as one of the first 12 riders out of the start house.
Christian Vande Velde didn't have the Tour de France that he was hoping for. After an injury-free run into the Tour for the first time in three years, Vande Velde crashed three times in the first stage and barely rode out of the first half of the Tour after a string of other painful spills. While other GC favorites were sent packing, the 35-year-old toughed it out and was able later to make important contributions in the final week that helped Garmin-Cervélo win the team GC prize.
PUY SAINT PIERRE, France (VN) - As teams whose top-five GC hopes have faded often do, Garmin-Cervélo is chasing the teams classification at the Tour de France. But with four stage wins, a week in the maillot jaune and an American rookie fighting for the top-10, Garmin’s Tour has been their best ever and Tom Danielson leads the squad in a run at the final podium in the final three days of the race.

SUPER-BESSE, France (VN) ─ Veteran American cyclist Christian Vande Velde knows well what a rollercoaster of luck and fitness the Tour de France can be. He finished fourth overall in the 2008 Tour, 11th in the 2009 Tour and crashed out of the 2010 competition with broken ribs. Well before that, he twice rode on U.S. Postal Service squads that deliver Lance Armstrong to overall victory.
Ben Delaney chats with Christian Vande Velde soon after the end of Thursday's stage.

LIÈGE, Belgium (VN) – The peloton returns to the scene of the Stockeau massacre in a race for the first time Sunday. The descent of the Ardennes climb was the site of the massive crash that led to the neutralization of stage 3 at last year’s Tour de France.
Christian Vande Velde isn’t going to tempt fate yet again and is steering clear of the Giro d’Italia this year as he prepares for a peak in form for the 2011 Tour de France.
Although shortened from five to three days, the Vuelta a Murcia in Spain will see a top field for the race set for March 4-6.
