2018 Vuelta a España

STAGE 9: Talavera de la Reina to La Covatilla

September 2, 2018

La Covatilla will be one of the first stages marked in the calendar of the general classification favorites. It is a long stage, just before a rest day, where climbers will have to give it their all in order to increase the time differences and to gain a certain advantage over the time trial specialists.

Ben King (Dimension Data) snatched his second stage victory of the Vuelta a España on Sunday, again making a long day in the breakaway count at the top of a tough finishing climb.

The 29-year-old American soloed away from a whittled down break with around 18 kilometers to go, and held off a spirited chase from Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) to secure the victory.

“I’ve never suffered that much in my entire life as on that last climb, so I’m still a little bit foggy in my mind. I’m sure it’ll sink in soon,” an exhausted King said at the finish.

A few minutes behind King on the day, the GC contenders engaged in a battle of their own. After breakaway rider Dylan Teuns (BMC Racing) came home third, Miguel Ángel López (Astana) snatched fourth in front of a select group of survivors that included Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb), Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Rigoberto Urán (EF Education First-Drapac), and Ion Izagirre (Bahrain-Merida).

Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) finished a few seconds behind, but came out of the day as the new race leader as Rudy Molard (Groupama-FDJ) lost time.

The 200.8-kilometer stage 9, the first at this year’s Vuelta featuring a “special-category” finishing climb, saw 11 riders get clear of the peloton in the early goings. King, Mollema, Teuns, Lluís Mas (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Reto Hollenstein (Katusha-Alpecin), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Luis Ángel Maté and Kenneth Vanbilsen (Cofidis), Tom Leezer (LottoNL-Jumbo), Jesús Ezquerra (Burgos-BH), and Aritz Bagues (Euskadi-Murias) comprised the day’s breakaway.

The pack gave the move some breathing room as both peloton and break rolled over three categorized climbs in the first half of the day. For a little while, King even held the provisional race lead on the road. The break’s advantage topped out at around 10 minutes with three quarters of the stage in the books and the brutal finishing climb of La Covatilla still to come.

As Movistar and then Sky pitched in to help Groupama-FDJ with the chase, the gap began to come down. Before long, attacks started to fly from the breakaway, with De Gendt applying pressure that proved too much for several of the riders in the move.

King made his own attack inside the final 20 kilometers, hitting the front with Mas and then leaving the Spaniard behind to press on solo.

He took an advantage of roughly a minute and a half into the final climb, just under 10 kilometers in length, with Mollema emerging as the biggest threat behind. The Dutchman made up considerable ground on the first half of the climb, with King’s gap down to just 30 seconds with five kilometers to go, but King had more in the tank for the final push. Although he could see King up the road at points, Mollema could not close down the American’s advantage. The gap began to yawn out again in the final kilometer, with King rolling down the finishing straight all smiles to score the stage 9 win.

Further down the mountain, the red jersey hopefuls were fighting their own battle. Race leader Molard found himself dropped with several kilometers left to go, leaving it up to the pre-race favorites to contest the race lead.

Although none of the GC riders managed to open up a sizable solo advantage, attacks and counterattacks from López, Quintana, and Kelderman shelled numerous GC hopefuls out the back of a rapidly dwindling group. López was the best-placed of the overall hopefuls on the day. Yates rode into the red jersey and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) now sits second even though both riders shipped time to the other big contenders in the GC battle. So too did Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky), who rolled home more than two minutes behind López.

The Vuelta peloton will now enjoy its first rest day on Monday before the action resumes with a sprinter-friendly stage 10 on Tuesday.
