2018 Giro d'Italia

Stage 15: Tolmezzo to Sappada

Week 3 begins with a stage across four categorized climbs in the Dolomites, none of which is particularly famous. After passing through the town of Auronzo di Cadore, the stage takes in two new climbs of Comelico (Passo Sant’Antonio and Costalissoio) with multiple ramps above 10 percent. The slightly uphill finish in Sappada is located a few hundred meters from where stage 15 concluded in 1987, the day Stephen Roche claimed the first maglia rosa of his “Giro-Tour-World Championships” grand slam that year.

Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) increased his overall lead and won his third win of the 2018 Giro d’Italia with a thrilling solo ride into Sappada. Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) came over the line in second and third 41 seconds back. Dumoulin now sits 2:11 behind the race leader. Yesterday’s stage winner and pre-race favorite Chris Froome (Sky) was dropped after being briefly distanced on a descent with 19 kilometers remaining. He would go on to lose 1:32 by the finish line.

Stage 15, top three

1. Simon Yates (Mitchelton – Scott) – 176km in 4h37’56”, average speed 37.994km/h
2. Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Pro Team) at 41″
3. Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) at 41″

GC, top three

1. Simon Yates (Mitchelton – Scott)
2. Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) at 2’11”
3. Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain – Merida) at 2’28”

Yates’ winning move came on the slopes of the penultimate climb. He held a 50-second gap onto the final climb to the finish, when Richard Carapaz (Movistar) surged in an attempt to catch the solo rider. This saw the chase group of Lopez, Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain Merida), and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) drop a struggling Dumoulin. The big Dutchman’s hopes of overall victory sank as the group disappeared up the road. However, indecision and infighting in the chase group saw the group give up a golden opportunity to put a stake through Dumoulin’s heart. He was able to catch them as they rode into the final kilometer and finished second in the sprint, picking up minor time bonus and keeping his chances alive.

The race leader’s winning move was cemented when he threw down his searing attack from 17 kilometers out. He was countering his own move from moments before, and no one in the lead group had the legs to stay with him.

“When we came off the descent, I saw there was a gap to a few guys and I asked Jack [Haig] to push the pace.

“It was really hard from the very bottom and I felt really good, so I chose my moment to go. They responded the first time, and I gave everything the second time. “

Even though Yates has three stage wins at this year’s race, he was uncharismatically emotional after stage 15 and seemed to be feeling more optimistic with his gap over Dumoulin.

“I’m a bit emotional after today. I gave it everything. It’s a good gap, but he could take two minutes out of me in the time trial. I’ve been fighting since Israel to get a gap, and I have that now, but it could vanish in 35km. We’ll see.”

On paper, the 176-kilometer medium mountain stage through the heart of the Dolomites was a day for the breakaway. A large breakaway did get away early, but EF Education First-Drapac set a hard pace on the front to keep the gap in check in an attempt to set up a Michael Woods long-range attack. With 70 kilometers left to race, the peloton had already been whittled down to a select few, and the breakaway was reduced to a handful of riders.

Woods’s attack was ultimately unsuccessful, and the remaining breakaway survivors, Giulio Ciccone (Bardiani-CSF) and Nico Denz (AG2R-La Mondiale), were reeled in with 18 kilometers left. This meant the final two short climbs were going to exclusively feature a thrilling GC battle. Froome found himself a few seconds adrift due to a small split on the descent and would start to lose chunks of time after Yates set off shortly after.

Yates’s solo move quickly put time between him and the indecisive chasers, who preferred to look at each other rather than mount a serious chase. Pozzovivo, Carapaz, and Pinot all put in attempts to bridge up to Yates, but shut down their efforts as soon as a group caught back on. A major slowing inside the final few kilometers allowed a dropped Dumoulin to pull himself back into the group and salvage his chances of overall victory.

Yates became the second rider since Eddy Merckx to win three road stages in the Giro d’Italia while wearing the maglia rosa.

Tomorrow sees the riders take a well-earned rest day before the race starts back up again on Tuesday with a decisive 34.5km time trial in Trento.
