Drone Hopper to become sponsor of Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec

Gianni Savio has secured sponsorship for his long-running Italian team.

Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec confirmed Wednesday that Drone Hopper would come aboard for four years from 2022. Drone Hopper – a Spanish aeronautical start-up – will become a key sponsor of the squad.

The name for Savio’s 2022 team is yet to be confirmed, but Drone Hopper is likely to receive top billing.

“We are facing a young, expanding company that intends to extend the knowledge of its brand internationally. I am pleased that he has chosen our team to do so and I thank the CEO Pablo Flores Peña for the trust he has placed,” Savio said.

“We have signed a four-year agreement, with a gradual investment for a good professional team over the next year and subsequently aspire to leap in category. We are ready to intensify our international activity even more to bring the name of our new sponsor around the world.”

Savio has been in the hunt for sponsors through the season. He had suggested to VeloNews in April that a deal was in the works that would keep the team afloat for season number 34 and beyond, and it seems negotiations with further partners are ongoing.

“In the next few weeks we will finish the meetings with the partners who have supported us over the years, without which we would never have been able to experience seasons as full of satisfactions as the past ones,” said team manager Marco Bellini.

“Many of them have already confirmed their support and we are confident others will do so too, first of all Androni Toys and Sidermec.”

Here’s hoping that Savio fits as many of those sponsor logos as possible onto the team jersey.

David Lappartient a shoo-in for UCI presidency re-election

David Lappartient is set to return to UCI presidency for the next four years.

The UCI published its list of nominees for UCI presidency and positions on the UCI management committee Tuesday, and Lappartient was the one name put forward for the top job. In the absence of competition, the Frenchman will enjoy four more years as president.

“With regards to the presidency, only David Lappartient, the current UCI president, submitted his candidacy,” read a statement from the UCI. “Pursuant to article 40, paragraph 3 of the UCI constitution, his election for a second four-year term will be confirmed without being put to vote.”

Lappartient, 48, took the role from Brian Cookson in 2017.

The American Bob Stapleton, former owner of Team HTC-Highroad, was on the list of nominees for the management committee of the Confederation of Panamerican Cycling.

The final elections will be made September 24.
