USA Cycling announced the hiring of six new staff members in three departments on Wednesday. Andy Sparks was named director of track programs, and Mark Guthart assumes the technical director role vacated by Shawn Farrell.

Other new hires include national events manager Laura Ryan, race director certification manager Cynthia Weisinger, digital and social media manager Steve Bitter, and sponsorship and member benefits manager Daniel Gillespie.

“It is a pleasure to welcome Andy, Mark, Cynthia, Laura, Steve, and Daniel to the USA Cycling family,” said USA Cycling CEO and president Steve Johnson. “Each new staff member brings a unique set of skills that I expect will profoundly and positively affect their respective areas of responsibility.”

Sparks was previously the USA Cycling endurance track head coach and USOC para-cycling track head coach. He twice coached the Olympic track cycling team and also directed the Performance-United Cycling Center in Mallorca, Spain, as well as the track cycling program at the UCI’s World Cycling Center in Switzerland.

An elite national commissaire, race director, Iowa Bicycle Racing Association board president and cyclist, Guthart also has business experience as owner of G4 Sports Marketing. As technical director, Guthart will oversee referee development and education, direct national event officiating, and manage technical advancement in the United States.

Ryan has 20-plus years of Olympic and Paralympic experience and is a three-time Olympian in team handball

From developing the Austin Ridge Riders as race director in 2006 to her 20 years as the director of training and certification for the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission, Weisinger will apply her blend of cycling knowledge and curriculum-based management experience as she assumes the race director certification manager role.

Bitter has experience with marketing agencies and professional sports teams. As the new digital and social media manager, his responsibilities will include full-time handling of USAC’s social media profiles and content development, and management of USA Cycling’s website and other online properties.

Gillespie comes to USA Cycling after a 10-year stint at SRM PowerMeters. The former professional mountain biker will work to develop new and current corporate partnerships.
