U.S. team announced for track world’s

USA Cycling announced Wednesdayits team for the 2001 World Track Cycling Championships. Ten athletes willrepresent the United States at the competition, which takes place Sept.26-30 in Antwerp, Belgium.

Marty Nothstein (Trexlertown, Pa.), Jeff LaBauve (Frisco, Texas), GarthBlackburn (Houston), Jame Carney (Durango, Colo.), Colby Pearce (Boulder,Colo.) and Mike Tillman (Santa Monica, Calif.) comprise the men’s roster,while Tanya Lindenmuth (Trexlertown, Pa.), Tammy Thomas (Pembroke Pines,Fla.), Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash.) and Erin Mirabella (Chula Vista,Calif.) make up the women’s squad.

The team is currently training at the Olympic Training Complex in ColoradoSprings, Colo. in preparation for the event.

2000 Olympic gold medalist Nothstein, already a proven sprinter, looks toconquer the kilometer time trial in Antwerp. The two-time world championwill also race in the Keirin. The holder of 30 national titles and sevenworld championship medals, Nothstein snagged bronze medals in the men’sscratch and elimination races, as well as a fourth place in the matchsprints at the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia.

LaBauve, who competed at last year’s world championships, holds fourcollegiate national titles and took silver medals in the Keirin and Olympicsprint, as well as a bronze in the match sprint event at the 2001 USCF EliteNational Track Cycling Championships. The Louisiana native will tackle thematch sprint for the U.S. team.

In August, two-time Olympian Carney, who holds more than a dozen nationaltitles, brought home a bronze in the points race from the final World TrackCup event in Malaysia, sealing a first overall in the points standings.Carney will compete in the men’s points race and the Madison. Tillman, whoholds four elite national titles, took a bronze medal in the Madison, sixthplace in the points race and ninth in the elimination event at the GoodwillGames in early September. Tillman will compete in the individual pursuit inBelgium for the U.S. squad.

Pearce captured two national titles in 2001 at the USCF Elite National TrackCycling Championships. He took third in the Madison and fifth in the pointsrace at the Goodwill Games and will be looking to medal in the Madison atworld championships. Blackburn snagged four first place finishes at theSouthern Games in Trinidad this spring, as well as the Top InternationalRider honors. Blackburn will race in the men’s Keirin event.

2000 Olympian Mirabella already has two national titles under her belt inthe individual pursuit and points race this year. Mirabella, who has been tothe Track World Championships, will be competing in the points race andindividual pursuit. Thomas will take to the track in the match sprint andthe 500m time trial in her first world championships appearance. She postedimpressive results at the 2001 USCF Elite National Track CyclingChampionships, taking second in the women’s 500m time trial event.

Reed has been at world championships every year since 1995 when she brokeinto the scene as a junior. The 23 year old took nine first-place finishesat American Velodrome Challenge events this year, and will compete in thewomen’s match sprint. 2000 Olympian Lindenmuth captured national titles inthe 500m time trial and the match sprints at the 2001 USCF Elite NationalTrack Cycling Championships. Competing for the third-consecutive year,Lindenmuth hopes to snag a victory in the women’s match sprint and 500m timetrial events
