USA Cycling on Tuesday released the U.S. team full roster for the upcoming2002 World Road Cycling Championships, Oct. 8-13, in Zolder, Belgium.Thirteen discretionary nominations were added to an earlier list ofautomatic slots released last week. The 25 athletes nominated earned theirberths on the World Championships team based on winning national road competitiontitles earlier this season and for consistent, outstanding results in internationalcompetition. The elite men’s road race team, with the largest delegation of athletes(7 men), will be led by Domo-Farm Frites’ Fred Rodriquez. Among the riderssupporting Rodriquez is Acqua e Sapone’s Guido Trenti, currently competingin the Vuelta a España. Trenti holds an American license but livesand trains in Italy.”We’re very pleased with the team nominations for this year’s WorldChampionships,” said Steve Johnson, chief operating officer and athleticdirector for USA Cycling. “Our elite men’s and women’s team riders likeRodriquez, Trenti, Dede Demet-Barry, Mari Holden and others bring a greatdeal of experience and depth to this team. And our junior riders are astrong and promising group of athletes, eager to get exposure to eliteinternational competition.”Editor’s note: Guido Trenti has historically been listed asan Italian rider by VeloNews, because while he holds a U.S. license, hehas never lived in the U.S., doesn’t speak English and has always competedin Italy. Now that he is a member of the U.S. world’s squad we will obviouslyre-visit that decision.
