Van Petegem and Zanini worked together to holdoff the riders coming into the finish.“This win is particularly enthusiastic for me because it has been quite a while since I last won,” Zanini said.  “I’m sure that today’s winwill be a turning point for me and my season and I’m sure that I’ll dowell at the Tour of the Flanders. The fight for Flanders will come downto a fight between myself, Tchmil and (Johan) Museeuw.”The race continues Wednesday with a 232-km stage between Zottegem andKoksijde. Results and overall standings after first stage of Three Days ofDe Panne:

Freire also said his participation at the Tour ofFlanders on Sunday is doubtful.”I don´t know what I can do. My doctor has told me to rest fortwo days at least,” Freire said. “Flanders is not a race you can go intounless you´re 100-percent. I might have to skip Flanders and insteadfocus on Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Amstel Gold.”Lotto´s Stive Vermaut also didn´t start Three Daysof De Panne due to heart problems. It could be the end of the season forthe 26-year-old, who raced one year with U.S. Postal Service, at leastuntil doctors diagnose the problem.”Stive suffers from abnormal heart rhythms and medical exams have revealedthat the right part of his heart is bigger than normal. The combinationof these two factors imply a great risk,” said Lotto´s team doctorDaniël De Neve. Vermaut finished 36th in his debut last year at theTour de France.
