Tour of the Gila race director Jack Brennan has notified VeloNews that the Tour of the Gila will have a new title sponsor for the 2004 edition of the race. National Geographic Adventure magazine has signed on, replacing the Silver City Holiday Inn Express as title sponsor, with the motel remaining on board as a co-sponsor.
Brennan explained that in a very unusual development, Mike Trumbull of the local Holiday Inn Express – the previous title sponsor – did the work to find the new one. Trumbull, who is chairman of the Silver City/Grant County Chamber of Commerce tourism committee, worked with the state tourism department to line up the new sponsor. “Mike knew we needed to increase our sponsorship, which has come almost totally from local sources, if we were to be able to grow, and took it on himself to find a corporate sponsor,” Brennan said. “Thanks to him, the chamber of commerce, the New Mexico Tourism Department and National Geographic Adventure, we’ll be able to increase the prize list for the pro men and women to $15,000 and $10,000, respectively, up from the $9000 and $6000 that were paid out last year.”
National Geographic Adventure was launched in 1999 to serve an audience of active, adventurous readers. The publisher, Francis X. Farrel, explained in a press release that the decision to become involved in the Tour of the Gila was made because, “New Mexico is a favorite adventure state among our readers and the Tour of the Gila really showcases its status as a natural wonder and outdoor playground.”
The 2004 18th Annual National Geographic Adventure Tour of the Gila stage race is scheduled for April 28 through May 2.
