Tirreno-Adriatico TTT changed to ITT due to weather

Italy has been battered by heavy winds, and due to fallen trees, the first stage of Tirreno, slated for Wednesday, has been modified

LIDO DI CAMAIORE, Italy — Tirreno-Adriatico organizers announced Monday that the race’s team time trial will be scrapped in favor of a 5.7km individual TT. Due to the extreme weather conditions that have affected Tuscany and in particular the area around Camaiore, RCS Sport said it was necessary to modify the first stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, scheduled for Wednesday, March 11.

The team time trial was originally slated to run 22.7km around the Lido di Camaiore, just northwest of Lucca, Italy. Strong winds knocked down trees along the route, the Movistar team said on Twitter.

The 2015 edition of Tirreno will now be bookended by individual time trials, with the final day of racing, on March 17, offering a 10km individual test.

Also of note for the Italian one-week stage race, sprinter Marcel Kittel (Giant-Alpecin) and Team Sky’s Chris Froome have withdrawn prior to the start due to illness.
