Taberlay, Sawicki Kick It at Kenda Cup 1

Sid Taberlay and Pua Sawicki repeated their 2009 wins at the Sage Brush Safari east of San Diego on Sunday.



After a rainy lead up to the first Kenda Cup race, Sunday sun greeted riders outside San Diego, with Sid Taberlay and Pua Sawicki taking the men’s and women’s pro fields.

Both Taberlay (Sho-Air/Specialized) and Sawicki (Okole repeated their 2009 wins at the Sage Brush Safari east of San Diego. Rounding out the men’s pro field were Jeremiah Bishop (Cannondale Factory Racing) and Manny Prado (Sho-Air/Specialized). After Pawicki, it was # Allison Mann (Rock N Road Cyclery) and Rebecca Tomaszewski (Niner/Ergon)

The 32-strong pro men’s field started a minute ahead of the women. Due to the pre-race rain, the pro field ran a lower loop of the course twice. Sawicki caught up with the men and finished 14th overall.

Sawicki was using the race to get ready for the upcoming ProXCT, UCI points event in Fontana on March 27-28.

Sunday’s Sage Brush Safari was the first event under the US Cup/Kenda Cup banner for 2010. The Kenda Cups act as local and regional qualifiers for the┬áSpecialized Invitational Finals, which are set for Sept. 11-12. The East and West Kenda Cups feature 15 locations from Ashland Oregon to French Lick Indiana.

Meanwhile, the US Cup Triple Crown opener, which also incorporates Kenda Cup #2, is at Bonelli Park in Southern California March 13-14. The second race of the Triple Crown is in Northrop, Colorado on May 15-16 and the final is June 19-20 in Massanutten, Virginia.
