World time trial champion Tony Martin was involved in a car/bike accident Wednesday while training in Switzerland. According to a release from his Omega Pharma-Quick Step team, Martin lost consciousness and suffered a fractured cheek bone.
“This morning Martin was transported by ambulance to the University Hospital in Zurich,” said the team in a statement. “His clinical condition is stable. In agreement with the team medical staff, today Tony Martin will undergo further specific examinations that will define the treatment he will need at that point.”
It is believed that Martin regained consciousness at the scene of the accident, but the team has not made this clear at this point.
Martin’s family is with him in Zurich and the team said it would provide further details of the world champion’s condition as they become available.
