Wachovia week kicks off in Lancaster

The biggest week of road racing on the U.S. calendar gets rolling late Tuesday afternoon in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with the first leg of the 2004 Wachovia Cycling Series. An expected field of 196 riders will take on 91 miles over 13 laps through Lancaster’s streets and Central Park, vying for a piece of the $20,000 purse. Several short hills and some tricky turns will make this a race for only the strong men. A year ago toughest of the group was CSC’s Jakob Piil, who soloed away from what was left of a shattered field late in the race to take a rain soaked 1:18 victory over Saturn’s Mark

A year ago toughest of the group was CSC’s Jakob Piil, who soloed away from what was left of a shattered field late in the race to take a rain soaked 1:18 victory over Saturn’s Mark McCormack. Piil and his powerful Danish squad are back in the States this year, along with their top off-season addition, a seemingly reborn Bobby Julich.

Racing on the East Coast will continue on Thursday in New Jersey, with the 16th running of the race in Trenton. This is traditionally a sprinters affair, as the 6.5-mile circuit is flat and fast. A year ago it was New Zealander Julian Dean giving CSC its second win in three days, taking the dash for the line ahead of Navigators Russian Oleg Grichkine.

Racing will again cover 91 miles in this 14-lap affair with another $20,000 on the line. The race starts and finishes in front of the New Jersey State Museum. From there riders will head around Cadwalader Park and through the winding turns of Barrack, Front, Warren and Livingston Streets.

The week culminates on Sunday with the biggest one-day race in American cycling, the 20th running of the Wachovia USPRO Championship. The event is the longest running and richest single-day cycling race in the U.S. Riders will cover 156 miles on a 14.4-mile circuit that runs through the heart of Philadelphia. The highlight is the famed Manayunk Wall with its nasty 17 percent grade. There will $135,500 on offer as well as the U.S. national title.

If you can’t see the race live but happen to be in the area, you can catch all the action on WPVI 6 (ABC) starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

A year ago the race came down to a sprint for the first time since 1998, with Saeco’s Italian speedster Stefano Zanini outgunning Slovenian Uros Murn and Dean. Meanwhile, McCormack was the top American in fourth, earning him the stars-and-stripes jersey.

The last American to win the race outright was Fred Rodriguez in 2001. Coming off a stage win at this year’s Giro d’Italia, Fast Freddy will be among the favorites this go round. Other Americans to watch include the always-dangerous Chris Horner, who took the final stage at the Tour of Connecticut on May 23.

“The jersey is about the only thing missing on my resume here in the states,” Horner said. “It’s definitely something I want bad.”
