Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) took the win in today’s brutal 252km stage, the longest of the race, that took riders from Amelia to Chieti.
In the closing kilometers, which brought the peloton through the tight, twisty roads of Chieti, an elite group broke off the front, including Sagan, Roman Kreuziger (Astana), Chris Horner (Radioshack-Nissan), Danilo Di Luca (Acqua & Saponi), and Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale). The uphill finish suited Sagan well and he bested Kreuziger in the final meters for the win. Matt Goss (GreenEdge) could not maintain contact with the main field on the hilly course and surrendered his overall lead.
American Chris Horner has now moved up into the overall leader’s jersey, seven seconds ahead of Kreuziger.
