LE CANNET-DES-MAURES, France (AFP) — Team Sky awoke on Saturday morning to find that 16 bikes had been stolen from a support vehicle as they prepared to compete in this weekend’s Tour du Haut Var in France.
The vehicle was parked at the team’s hotel in Trans-en-Provence. The team found replacements in time for its riders to participate in the opening stage at Le Cannet-des-Maures.
“The two (bikes) that were left in the van are going to be used and we managed to retrieve five others from our training center in Nice, which is about an hour away from where we’re staying,” said Sky’s race coach Shaun Stephens.
“We’ve got various training bikes and spare components, so fortunately the show goes on.”
Neither Chris Froome nor Bradley Wiggins, the last two winners of the Tour de France, will compete for Team Sky in the two-stage event.
