The teams will be eligible to compete in the world's most prestigious events next season.

U.S.-based Team Type 1 and UnitedHealthcare-Maxxis will race as a UCI-registered Professional Continental team for the 2011 season, the UCI announced Tuesday.

The upgrade in registration means the teams will be eligible for invitations to ProTour races. Pro Continental-registered teams in the 2010 season included BMC, Cervelo TestTeam, BBobx Bouygues, Cofidis and Vacansoleil.

“The Giro, the Vuelta, Paris-Roubaix, all of those are now within our reach,” said Team Type 1 co-founder Phil Southerland. “The Tour de France is not a goal for us in the immediate future — let’s face it, that’s the biggest sporting event in the world and you have to ride around the block a couple of times before they invite you.”

Team Type 1 was founded in 2004 by Southerland and Joe Eldridge, two cyclists with diabetes who went on to win the Race Across America with an eight-rider team of diabetic athletes. They won the race four times and expanded the program to include a men’s and women’s professional team, a triathlon team, a development team and Team Type 2.
