Sutherland narrowly misses Coppi e Bartali stage win

U.S.-based Aussie storms to near-win in Italy

Rory Sutherland narrowly missed out on a stage win at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali in Levizzano, Italy, Thursday, finishing second behind Diego Ulissi (Lampre-ISD). The Aussie, based for the last five years in the U.S., topped former Giro d’Italia winner Danilo Di Luca (Acqua & Sapone) in the uphill sprint on a tough finishing circuit that closed stage 3.

In a team release, Sutherland credited his UnitedHealthcare teammates with the result, his best since finishing second in stage 4 of the 2011 Vuelta a Asturias.

“Today was a hard stage in the mountains with a hard finishing circuit done five times (11kms each lap),” said Sutherland. “The boys rode well today as a team. They helped me with positioning coming into the finale, covering attacks, and more. Of course it would have been great to take first, but it’s nice to hit the podium here at Coppi e Bartali, especially after the hard work the boys put in today.”
