Whether it’s a road race or a time trial, Quick Step’s Stijn Devolder will wear the Belgian national champion’s jersey for the next year. Devolder won the Belgian national time trial on Sunday and became the first rider to win the national road and TT titles in the same season.
Devolder had won the Belgian road championships in 2007 and the time trial championships in 2008.
Devolder had already won the 2010 Belgian national road title back in June. The time trial championships were held Sunday on a challenging, 45km circuit around Habay-La Neuve.
The two-time Tour of Flanders champ edged Sebastien Rosseler (RadioShack) by 30 seconds with Leif Hoste (Omega-Lotto) stopping the clock for third at 51 seconds back.
“This is a dream come true,” Devolder said. “After having claimed the national road championship title, I really only focused on this race, I wanted this historic double result,” Devolder said in a team release. “I competed at Tour de Poland while actually thinking about today’s competition, and during this past week I trained really hard with my time-trial bicycle in order to leave nothing to chance.
“Last night I checked out the circuit with our team’s sports director Rik Van Slycke and this morning before the race I trained again on the track,” he continued. “I will be racing at Eneco Tour from Tuesday. My objective is to do well and honor these two jerseys I claimed. Besides, the race will have us pedal near my hometown, so that’ll be a further motivation to do the best I can.”
