Spectator intentionally causes crash at Tour de La Réunion

Tour Cycliste Antenne Reúnion spectator pulls race barriers into the path of an oncoming bunch, causing multiple riders to crash

An angry spectator caused a high-speed crash Sunday in the Tour Cycliste Antenne Reúnion, a small road race on the French island of La Reúnion.

Video from the race shows a man deliberately pulling race barriers into the path of oncoming riders, leaving an unlucky few with no time to react. Those who couldn’t dodge the metal obstacle suddenly thrust in their way found themselves flying over their handlebars.

According to a local journalist reporting for the Antenne Reúnion network for which the race is named, the culprit was the father of a race participant brought down by an earlier crash. Apparently angered that organizers did not stop the race in the wake of that initial crash, the spectator chose to vent his frustration by putting several other riders in harm’s way.

Race organizers decided to neutralize the stage following the incident.
