Six ‘wild cards’ for Flanders

Second division teams with a focus on classics will round out the field for the Tour of Flanders

Second division teams with a heavy focus on classics will round out the field for the Tour of Flanders in April.

Race organizers from the Ronde van Vlaanderen revealed six “wild-card” teams getting a nod to ride the cobblestones of Belgium in the April 1 classic that brings out an estimated 1 million fans.

Three Belgium teams – Landbouwkrediet, Topsport Vlaandere and Accent Jobs – will be joined by the squads of Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) and Filippo Pozzato (Farnese Vini).

Also getting the nod is Dutch team, Project 1t41 (former Skil-Shimano, set to be renamed with a new sponsor in early March).

The six invitees will join the 18 ProTeam squads already guaranteed a slot in the WorldTour event.
