Saturday’s Clásica San Sebastián is Spain’s major one-day classic, the first major race since the end of the Tour de France, and an important Olympic road race tune up.

As such, the 225-kilometer race features a stellar line-up, with starters including Carlos Sastre, Alberto Contador, Alejandro Valverde, Paulo Bettini and Davide Rebellin, among others. (full rosters below).

The course is famous for its Jaizkebel climb, a Cat. 1 toughy that comes about 40km from the finish and the Cat. 3 Alto de Arkale, just 16km from the end.

Team Columbia director says the team is betting on any early breaks being reeled in on the Jaizkebel.

“We won’t be looking at getting in the early breaks unless they’re 15 or 20-strong and looking really dangerous. The best policy at San Sebastian is always to wait for the Jaizkebel,” he said.

“There’s invariably a move early on, but the Spanish teams always calculate it so things come back together for Jaizkebel. So that’s where we will plan to try and make our move.”
