Rowney taken out by spectator in Drenthe finish

Velocio-SRAM's Loren Rowney suffers a crash at the finish after a spectator reaches over the barriers and grabs her handlebars

A spectator caused Australian Loren Rowney (Velocio-SRAM) to crash at the finish of the Ronde van Drenthe race in the Netherlands on Thursday.

Video footage shows a man, standing against the barriers on the right side of the finish chute. He appears to have reached out and grabbed Rowney’s handlebars. She went tumbling to the ground, right before the finish line.

Rowney was sprinting for the win in a group of eight riders at the end of the 138.2km race. From that group, Wiggle-Honda’s Giorgia Bronzini was the winner, with Valentina Scandolara (Orica-AIS) in second and Annemiek van Vleuten (Bigla) finishing third.

After the race, Velocio-SRAM tweeted, “@LorenRowney involved in a crash in the last 50m but is up and walking away.”
