Quick Step’s 23-year-old Italian Davide Malacarne locked up his victory in the climber’s competition during stage 6 of Tirreno-Adriatico Monday.

“I have to thank the team for the great work they did in the first part of the race,” he said. “It was an honor to see the whole team — and a champion like Boonen — working for me. In the final part I petered out. We were riding at a high pace and I paid for yesterday’s efforts. This is the first important jersey of my career, it will always have a special place in my fondest memories.”
