Phinney takes third in world junior TT

Taylor Phinney wrapped up the his world junior world championship run Friday with a third-place finish in the individual time trial, 8 seconds off the winning pace of Poland’s Michal Kwiatkowski. Phinney won gold in the 3,000-meter individual pursuit on the track last Saturday. Entering the race as the defending world champion, Phinney recorded a time of 36 minutes, 29.15 seconds over the 26.8-kilometer course.

Phinney won gold in the 3,000-meter individual pursuit on the track last Saturday.

Entering the race as the defending world champion, Phinney recorded a time of 36 minutes, 29.15 seconds over the 26.8-kilometer course.

But Kwiatkowski turned in a 36:21.21 to claim the rainbow jersey and silver medalist Jakob Steigmiller of Germany finished five seconds back at 36:26.54.

Other Americans finishes included Nathan Brown in 12th and Adam Leibovitz in 40th. Leibovitz suffered a mechanical at the start.

In the women’s time trial, Americans Jerika Hutchinson and Sinead Miller placed 12th and 20th respectively. Maria Grandt Petersen of Denmark took gold with a 21:03.11 over 14.1 kilometers.

The 2008 UCI Junior Road & Track World Championships conclude on Sunday with the road race events. Starting for the U.S. National Team in the men’s race will be Brown, Leibovitz and Jacob Rathe, while Hutchinson and Miller will contest the women’s race.
