Philippe Gilbert wins Algarve opener; Alberto Contador center of attention

Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) took his inaugural victory of the 2011 season in the opening stage of the Volta a Algarve on a day that was overshadowed by the return of Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Sungard).

Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) took his inaugural victory of the 2011 season in the opening stage of the Volta a Algarve on a day that was overshadowed by the return of Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Sungard).

Contador’s presence at the start line Wednesday in the 157.5km first stage in Faro brought a multitude of journalists, who chronicled every move and gesture of the embattled Tour-winner who was cleared of doping allegations Tuesday afternoon by the Spanish cycling federation.

“It’s a victory just to be here,” Contador said before the start. He flew to Lisbon, but was forced to take a five-hour taxi ride to the Algarve after missing a connection, arriving in Faro at 2 a.m. “I hardly slept at all last night. I am happy to be here. I feel an enormous sense of satisfaction, not only for me, but for my teammates and my sponsors.”

Dramatic return to competition

Contador lined up for his first race since the final stage of the 2010 Tour de France donning the No. 1 start number as the two-time defending champion.

It’s been some 205 days since Contador last raced and the three-time Tour champion admitted that the ongoing doping case has left a mark despite his insistence of innocence.

“There’s been irreparable damage to my image,” Contador told Spanish television station VEO7. “I’ve been living this uncertainty for many months. They have been months I wouldn’t wish on anyone.”

Contador said he never considered accepting the proposed one-year ban offered by the Spanish cycling federation nearly three weeks ago and vows to fight any appeal if the UCI or the World Anti-Doping Agency decide to challenge the dramatic reversal.

“When you haven’t done anything wrong and your conscience is clear … you have to fight,” Contador said in the pre-taped interview. “It’s been six months of sleepless nights, pulling your hair out, there were times when I cried. I felt like they wanted to guillotine me.”

Contador said he wants to turn his attention to competition and let his legal team handle any upcoming court battles. Both the UCI and WADA will have several weeks to study the Spanish federation’s decision before finally deciding on their next step.

Contador said he was particularly affected by comments from UCI president Pat McQuaid, who said in one interview that the “Contador case is damaging cycling.”

“It’s incredible to me that the leaders of your sport want to guillotine you when they know that you haven’t committed any error. The blame is on the institutions that failed and didn’t understand how to handle this case. I hope that they rethink this rule for the good of the sport,” Contador said. “I am left with a very big scar that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”

Gilbert shines

Once the race was underway, the pack quickly left the Contador controversy in the rear-view mirror and got down to the business of racing bikes.

The 157.5km stage from Faro to Albufeira tackled some of the low-lying hills hugging the Algarve coast. Christian Meier (UnitedHealthcare) featured in a four-man breakaway that dominated the stage until they were reeled in on the closing 15km of the course.

A steep hill in the final kilometer provided the perfect launching pad for Gilbert, who thrives on those kinds of finales. He held clear to fend off the chasing sprinters by five seconds to claim his first win on the 2011 season as well as the leader’s jersey.

Gerald Ciolek (Quick Step) led the pack across the line for second, with André Greipel (Omega Pharma-Lotto), a winner here a year ago on the same finish, taking third. Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Cervélo) was fourth. Contador, meanwhile, finished safely in the pack.
