Pantani, Armstrong test each other at Catalana

Spaniard Edo wins stage 1 in sprint

Angel Edo of the Spanish outfit Maia won the first stage at the Catalan Cycling Week in Spain on Monday. Edo outsprinted Italians Denis Zanette and Stefano Garzelli at the end of the 143km route around Lloret De Mar. Earlier in the race, Marco Pantani and Lance Armstrong tested each other in the mountains, and both finished with the lead group.
“I’m thrilled to win on home territory,” said the Barcelona-born Edo, a 30-year-old pro who also won here in 1994.
On reaching the foot of Alt de Sant Grau, a category 1 climb, Pantani attacked, leaving much of the peleton stretched out behind him. Armstrong kept pace with the Italian and briefly took the lead on the descent. Dutch Rabobank rider Michael Boogerd also made a bid for the lead near the summit.
Meanwhile, Germany’s Jan Ullrich (Telekom) and U.S. Postal recruit Roberto Heras opted not to take risks on the treacherous descent, which was slick from recent rain and mudslides. Heras lost nearly eight minutes, and Ullrich finished 11:55 behind the leaders. Tuesday’s second stage, a 169km race between Lloret and Empuriabravam also features another category 1 climb.
