Omega Pharma-Lotto is bringing a mix of youth and experience to next weekend’s start of the Giro d’Italia.
Following the team’s success in the spring classics, capped by Philippe Gilbert’s victory at Amstel Gold Race and his No. 1 ranking in the UCI world classification, the team is shifting gears for the season’s first grand tour.
The team won’t have a top GC man, but it’s hoping for strong results from Spanish climber Dani Moreno and Matthew Lloyd once the Giro hits the decisive third week. Moreno is skipping the Vuelta a España in favor of the harder Giro with hopes of a top-10 overall.
The team will bring three promising grand-tour rookies, led by former Tour de l’Avenir winner Jan Bakelants. Adam Blythe will try his luck in the sprints while Michiel Elijzen will do his best on Dutch roads and in the time trials.
The team will be anchored by experienced veterans Sebastian Lang, Olivier Kaisen and Charles Wegelius.
