Olympic selection goes through Boise as Exergy Tour announces 17 teams

Big-money Idaho tour will provide crucial points for late Olympic qualifiers

Exergy Tour organizers on Monday announced the inaugural race’s full 17-team lineup, headlined by Specialized-lululemon, GreenEdge-AIS and world road champion Giorgia Bronzini’s Diadora-Pasta Zara team. Also among the teams confirmed for the five-day tour are American teams such as Tibco-To The Top and Exergy Twenty12.

“I am confident we have found the right balance with the 17 teams that shall be competing at the inaugural Exergy Tour,” said James Carkulis, CEO of Exergy Development Group in a release. “Showcasing ladies’ professional cycling at the international level in the USA has been remiss; and we are honored to welcome these athletes in the first year of the Exergy Tour and dedicated to grow into the future as one of the premier ladies professional cycling races in the world.”

Organizers last week announced that the event would offer a $100,000 prize purse, making it one of the richest races in the world for men or women. On top of the money on offer, the tour is the final significant opportunity for riders and nations to impact selections for the London Olympics.

All but one of the American women on the long list for the Olympic team is expected to be in Boise, Idaho, for the race. The U.S. road team will come from the long list, which includes Boise local Kristin Armstrong, Theresa Cliff-Ryan, Andrea Dvorak, Kristin McGrath and Lauren Tamayo (Exergy), U.S. road champ Robin Farina (NOW-Novartis for MS), Megan Guarnier and Amanda Miller (Tibco), Janel Holcomb and Carmen Small (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies), and Amber Neben and Evelyn Stevens (Specialized-lululemon). Long team member Shelley Olds’ AA is not among the 17 teams listed by race organizers on Monday.
