Poor conditions Thursday caused Nature Valley Grand Prix officials to cancel the race’s third stage, the Cannon Falls Road Race for the second time in three years.
Thunderstorms drenched the course before the start, but conditions appeared to be improving before the start of the men’s race.
Resistant to canceling, race officials first attempted to change the road race course into a criterium through Cannon Falls, but the last-minute course change proved too challenging to pull off.
Another round of thunderstorms were approaching when officials called off the race. VeloNews photographer Casey B. Gibson reported rainfall of 8.4 inches overnight in the area.
Friday’s Uptown Minneapolis Criterium will begin with the women’s 28-lap race at 6:15 p.m., followed by the men’s 40-lap race beginning at 7:45 in the evening.
