Taylor Phinney's eager to make the U.S. team for the London Games, but he wouldn't mind racing the USA Pro Cycling CHallenge, either. Meanwhile, Greg Henderson has joined old friend André Greipel at Lotto Belisol, hoping to get his ticket punched for the Tour de France.

Taylor Phinney, who hopes to make the U.S. team for the London Olympics, is also interested in racing the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge. Father Davis Phinney says his son wouldn’t be a candidate for the overall title but has his eyes on the final time trial.

“This kind of mountainous race would not favor him as an overall title contender and not many of the stages would favor him,” Davis Phinney said. “But he did comment the other night to (his mom) Connie via text, when they announced all the host cities, that he was intending to win the final time trial in Denver.

“He’s pretty good at calling his shots and he usually backs them up. But we’ll see.”

Otago Daily Times: Henderson wants Tour ticket

Greg Henderson left Team Sky for Lotto Belisol in hopes of getting a chance to ride the Tour de France, where instead of towing Mark Cavendish to the line he could lead out his old pal André Greipel.

“I started talking with Greipel during the Tour de France this year and said, `Look, mate, I’ve had enough of being neglected by Sky,'” Henderson said.

“The worst-kept secret in cycling was that Mark Cavendish was joining Sky. Obviously he is the fastest guy in the world at the moment and is going to be the No 1 sprinter.

So I thought I’m going to be put to lead-out duties there anyway and I’d rather lead out a friend than lead out Mark Cavendish, especially after what Sky had put me through. So we started talks with Lotto.”
