Giro Donne organizer steps down — wielerrevue.nl
Giro d’Italia Femminile organizer Epinike has withdrawn from the Italian Cycling Federation-owned event, leaving the biggest women’s stage race on the international calendar in doubt for 2013. Wielerrevue.nl reports on Monday that the Italian sports management firm will not produce the race — won in 2010 by American Mara Abbott — and that men’s Giro promoter RCS Sport will not step in to fill the void.
“We have had positive experiences, but now our focus is on other things,” Epinike spokeswoman Sara Brambilla told wielerrevue.nl.
According to wielerrevue.nl, a source at RCS Sport said that it would not take on management of the women’s Giro: “A re-entry into women’s cycling will not happen in the near future… If the Giro d’Italia brand would benefit from it, then RCS Sport would definitely consider it; at this point, however, it is not a thought, and not a priority.”
