HARELBEKE, Belgium (VN) — In all, eight riders were taken to nearby hospitals due to injuries suffered at E3 Harelbeke on Friday. Among them were David Millar (Garmin-Barracuda) with a broken collarbone and Carlos Barredo (Rabobank) with a broken wrist.
Millar went down in a nasty pile-up along a cobbled road with 70km to go; several riders launched off their bikes and crossed a four-foot ditch that paralleled the road. Among the victims of that crash, Jens Mouris (GreenEdge), Jan Ghyselinck (Cofidis) and Koen De Kort (Project 1t4i) all abandoned the race and were taken to hospitals.
After the race, Millar wrote on Twitter: “I broke my collarbone, now it’s decision time, to operate or not to operate?”
With 34km remaining, Barredo crashed into defending champion Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack-Nissan) atop the cobbled climb of the Oude Kwaremont while Cancellara was replacing a flat front wheel. Barredo landed on his right arm and did not rejoin the race. The Rabobank team later confirmed to the AFP that Barredo had suffered a fracture in the crash.
Other riders who went to hospital include Rob Goris (Accent Jobs-Willems Verandas) and Sander Cordell and Frederique Robert, both of Lotto-Belisol.
