The Vuelta a Chihuahua is nabbing some big stars for its one-day criterium set for late October, but the week-long stage race has been shelved this year.

Race organizers confirmed to VeloNews that the fifth edition of the Vuelta a Chihuahua, run in October in northern Mexico since 2006, will not be held this year. Officials said a change in regional government forced them to change their plans.

So instead of a stage race, a one-day criterium will be held in the downtown streets of Chihuahua on October 24.

The criterium is already gaining confirmation from some of the biggest names in the European peloton.

Alexander Vinokourov (Astana) is the latest star to confirm his presence. Other names include Ivan Basso, Andy and Frank Schleck, Samuel Sánchez, Roman Kreuziger, Peter Sagan and Alexander Kolobnev.

Spanish riders dominated the Mexican stage since its inception in 2006. Luís Pérez won the inaugural edition in 2006 while Francisco Mancebo won in 2007-08. Last year, Oscar Sevilla won in Rock Racing colors.
