Marianne Vos (Rabobank) scored the hat trick on Saturday at the Giro Rosa, winning her third stage ahead of Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle Honda) and Shelley Olds (Tibco-To the Top).
After winning stage 3 in Cerro al Volturno and stage 4 in Castelfidardo, the world road champion proved her strength yet again in the 120km seventh stage, which featured an eight-lap circuit in Corbetta before raucous crowds.
“It was a pity that I wasn’t able to battle for the maglia rosa this year, even though three stage wins aren’t bad at all,” said Vos.
Bronzini said she fought to catch Vos 150 meters from the finish line, “but she was really unbeatable.”
“No excuses — she’s the strongest and today she really wanted to get the stage win, as she had already lost the opportunity to place well in the general classification,” Bronzini added.
Mara Abbott (U.S. National) finished with a group nine seconds back but remains atop the GC going into Sunday’s finale, an individual time trial in Cremona. Tatiana Guderzo (MCipollini Giordana) is second at 2:28 with Claudia Häusler (Tibco) third at 2:52.
