Spaniard Iban Mayo of the Euskaltel team eased over the finish line to win the 11th edition of the Alps Classic, a 175 km run between Aix-les-Bains and Chambery, France on Saturday.
The 23-year-old Mayo, who recently collected his first major race win when victorious in the Grand Prix Midi-Libre last month, held off American double Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong to finish first. Armstrong beat Russian Pavel Tonkov in a sprint finish to come second, with Tonkov third.
Mayo, who comes from the Basque country, launched a solitary attack in trying weather conditions and held off the peloton’s threat to grab his second win in as many months.
