The WorldTour is coming to Utah in August. Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah organizers will announce Thursday that HTC-Highroad, BMC Racing and RadioShack will each take part in the event August 9-14.
Also among the first seven teams named for the first-time UCI tour will be Pro Continental squads UnitedHealthcare, Spidertech-C10 and Team Type 1-Sanofi Aventis.
The fourth and final American ProTeam, Garmin-Cervélo, has been offered an invitation, but has not yet confirmed.
Defending overall champion Levi Leipheimer expected to be back with RadioShack for the prologue in Park City. “I look forward to defending my title with Team RadioShack this year,” said Leipheimer. “The 2011 Tour of Utah is a must-see race for U.S. fans, where you’ll find the best cycling athletes in the world competing across one of the most scenic regions in the world.”
HTC boss Bob Stapleton said he looks forward for the backdrop of the Utah mountains for the six-day race. “We’re very enthusiastic about the Tour of Utah,” he said. “It offers an ideal setting for dramatic competition.”
The UCI 2.1 Tour of Utah will open August 9 with a prologue in Park City, Utah, and wrap up with the queen stage to Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort on August 14.
