The 22-team field at the Tour of the Battenkill will not be growing by one before the start on Sunday. Kelly Benefit Strategies will not make the race, citing difficulties in rearranging travel after their scheduled trip to Tro Bro Leon was canceled due to the Icelandic volcano that has disrupted travel across Europe.
“We tried to change the tickets and it was a complete nightmare,” said director Jake Erker. “To get the tickets changed to get into New York and then fly to France from there would have been virtually impossible, so unfortunately we had to pull the pin.”
The team attempted the late hour change to take the line at the 200km one-day race near Cambridge, New York when they learned of the travel restrictions Thursday night.
“The guys really wanted to do it,” said Erker. “But when we started rescheduling flights to France, we saw that some of the itineraries were completely gone. Now we¹re not able to get some of the guys into France until the 21st or 22nd” of April.
The team is scheduled to start the Tour of Brittany on April 25, assuming that the continent-wide travel restrictions are lifted before then.
