The introduction of major reforms in cycling by the International CyclingUnion (UCI) has led to the creation of a new Pro Tour series, the firstrace of which, the Paris-Nice, ended on Sunday. Now coupled with major stage races, the series will also replace boththe 10-race World Cup – which included many one-day classics such as theMilan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix – and the UCI world rankings. Instead, the Pro Tour’s 27 races, which will include the Tours of Italy, Franceand Spain, will reward the riders with the most points with a Pro Tourleader’s jersey. The Tour de France, being the most prestigious and most difficult raceon the calendar, will reward the most.Except for the three-week races – where the first 20 overall finishersgain Pro Tour points – the remaining races, such as Paris-Nice and Milan-SanRemo, will attribute points to the first 10 overall finishers. In stage races, one point is attibuted to the stage winner. Howeverin the more difficult three-week Tours, the first three stage finishersare awarded three, two and one point each. The Tour de France, however, stands apart from the less difficult Girod’Italia and Vuelta a España .  For example, last year AmericanLance Armstrong would have picked up 100 points for what was his sixthvictory.Giro winner Damiano Cunego and Vuelta winner Roberto Heras would havebeen attributed 85 points for their overall victories. While Julich can lay temporary claim to the ProTour leader’s jersey, the outcome of Tirreno-Adriatico may affect the standings, as the week-long Italian race is also a ProTour event and current race leader Oscar Freire has also won three stages.
