VILLAJOYOSA, Spain (VN) — Johnny Hoogerland was hospitalized in Spain Sunday after he was hit by a car while training for the Tour Méditerranéen, according to his Vacansoleil-DCM team.

Hoogerland was motorpacing and had moved in front of the scooter on a slight downhill section when a turning car struck him, his team said in a press release.

The 29-year-old was taken to the hospital in Villajoyosa, where doctors diagnosed some rib fractures and other injuries that they said would require further examination.

The team said it would have more information on Hoogerland’s condition on Monday.
