Jesse Sergent (Trek-Livestrong) will leave the U23 squad after the Cascade Classic this weekend to join RadioShack as a stagiaire for the remainder of the 2010 season. Sergent, the silver medalist in the individual pursuit at the world track championships this year, confirmed the move Thursday.

“I’m heading over to Europe on Thursday, next Thursday, and am going to be racing the rest of the year with RadioShack as a staigaire,” said Sergent. “So, I came here to get some racing in the legs and try and get the form up. And so, yeah, it’s been going well, the weather’s nice and it’s definitely better than training.”

Sergent won the prologue at Cascade ahead of teammate Alex Dowsett and finished second to Ben Day (Fly V Australia) in the stage 2 time trial. The Kiwi burst onto the North American radar earlier this year when he beat a field that included Dave Zabriskie (Garmin-Transitions) and Levi Leipheimer (RadioShack) in the time trial at the Tour of the Gila.

Sergent was also part of the Trek squad that saw a good run of European results this sprint, including his third overall at the Olympia’s Tour, where teammate Taylor Phinney won the GC. He will join Phinney as RadioShack’s second stagiaire this season.

Before tackling what should be his first professional season in 2011, Sergent will focus on the track world championships this winter, where he plans to ride the team pursuit for New Zealand. In the meantime, he confirmed that he is in contract discussions with RadioShack and while he did not have a deal yet for next year, he hoped that would happen soon.

“I’m not 100 percent too sure on next year, on where I’ll be living or what I’ll be doing yet,” said Sergent. “Definitely it’s something that we’re working on at the moment and I really hope things work out and I can be with them next year.”

Sergent will base himself out of Girona, Spain, for the rest of the year.
