Jeanson shatters field in Tucson as Steinbrecher wins sprint

The men’s race at the Tucson Bicycle Classic may have boiled down to a sprint after more than three hours of racing on Saturday, but Geneviève Jeanson wasn’t about to wait around for such nonsense. The men’s race at the Tucson Bicycle Classic may have boiled down to a sprint after more than three hours of racing on Saturday, but Geneviève Jeanson wasn’t about to wait around for such nonsense. As she did on this stage in 2002, the Rona rider soloed away from the women’s field to win the Gates Pass Garrett Lemire Memorial Road Race by more than nine minutes.

Jeanson, who also took Friday’s individual time trial, finished her 63-mile workout on the 21-mile circuit in 2:42:26. The runner-up, her teammate Emilie Roy, wouldn’t turn up until nine minutes and two seconds later. Third went to Gabriela Gonzales-Ferrat (Velo Bella) at 9:48.

Jeanson’s win gave her the traditionally insurmountable lead on general classification – 10:07 over Roy and 11:17 over Gonzales-Ferrat – with only Sunday’s 39-mile Artisan Prosthetics Circuit Race remaining.

The men’s race held a little more suspense, as does Sunday’s 50-mile wrapup. After 84 miles, there were a couple dozen guys ready and willing to fight it out at the end, and the win went to Will Steinbrecher (Jelly Belly-Aramar), with Andy Wilson (Viejas) second and Michael Dietrich (Fiordifrutta) third, all in the same time.

Ryan Blickem (Aida’s Bail Bonds) held onto his overall lead, but Steinbrecher – eighth in Friday’s TT – vaulted into second overall at nine seconds back. Michael Sayers (Health Net-Maxxis) stands third at 0:17.
