Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) won the all-star mountaintop sprint to take his first victory of the season and pad his GC lead ahead of the final day of racing at Paris-Nice.

Paris-Nice stage 6

Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) managed to hold off the sprinters to take his first career victory on stage 6 of Paris-Nice after a late solo move in the final 10km.

The 23-year-old countered a late move by Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ) to go solo into the final 10km, taking advantage of a short punchy climb. Behind, a disorganized peloton looked at each other for too long. The sprinters were right on Burgaudeau’s wheel as he crossed the line but the Frenchman hung on to deny Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma).

Paris-Nice stage 5

Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) put on a big solo show to take victory on stage 5 of Paris-Nice, the first WorldTour win of his career.

McNulty, who had been eliminated from the overall contest early in the race after losing a lot of time in the crosswinds of stage 2, got into the early two-man breakaway. The American rider attacked his fellow escapees on Col de la Mure, the final of five climbs, with 39 kilometers to go.

Paris-Nice stage 4

Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) came out on top in the Paris-Nice time trial on stage 4 to beat teammates Primož Roglič and Rohan Dennis, with yet another Jumbo-Visma 1,2,3 in this year’s race.

The win was enough to see van Aert take the yellowjersey off another Jumbo-Visma rider, Chrostophe Laporte.

Paris-Nice stage 3

Mads Pedersen (Trek Segafredo) claimed victory on stage 3 of Paris-Nice after a powerful sprint to the line.

Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) finished second with Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) taking third after he was left powerless behind Pedersen in the uphill sprint to the line. The Dane was given the perfect leadout from his teammate Jasper Stuyven, with the Belgian hitting the front with around 500m to go. There was a fall for race leader Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) but the Frenchman retained his yellow jersey.

Paris-Nice stage 2

On a day ravaged by severe and almost constant crosswinds Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) beat Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) to the line in Orléans to take stage 2 of Paris-Nice.

Christophe Laporte finished safely in the lead group to retain his yellow jersey as the overall leader in the race.

Jakobsen was one of just a handful of top-level sprinters to survive a day of carnage in the crosswinds with his teammates delivering him perfectly to the finishline. It was a day to forget for American hope Brandon McNulty who finished over a minute down on the stage.

Paris-Nice stage 1

Christophe Laporte led home an incredible Jumbo-Visma 1-2-3 on the opening stage of Paris-Nice with Primož Roglič and Wout van Aert rounding out the top three.

The Dutch squad raced away from the rest of the peloton over the final climb less than 10 kilometers from the finish. There was no holding them as Ineos Grenadiers and UAE Team Emirates both lost ground in the overall standings.

Paris-Nice 2022 overview

Paris-Nice runs Sunday, March 6 through Sunday, March 13, and is the first major European WorldTour stage race of the 2022 season, testing riders and teams over eight days.

The “Race to the Sun” can be nearly as unpredictable as the Tour de France. It is considered a valid test of riders’ fitness and teamwork — with a time trial, climbing, and sprinting stages — and is often used to by the classics stars and Tour de France contenders as they build up for their major objectives.

The 2021 edition saw Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) crumble on the final stage when he was shed from the front group and crashed several times trying to chase back on. He dropped to ninth place, while Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) defended his title.

Roglič is again on the start list for 2022 and will have the help of teammate Wout van Aert, while Schachmann will be looking for a three-peat.

American Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) is coming off a win at the Faun-Ardèche classic and will have teammate João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) with him. And sprinters Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe), Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) will have a test of their respective sprint trains.
