Haga fractures orbital bone, undergoes surgery

American cyclist Chad Haga underwent surgery Saturday afternoon to repair wounds to his neck and chin, his Giant-Alpecin team said in a statement. The 27-year-old America, who hails from Texas, will likely require a future surgery to repair a fractured orbital bone.
Haga was one of six Giant-Alpecin riders to be struck by a motorist during a training ride on Saturday morning near Alicante, Spain. The accident was reportedly caused by a British woman who was driving on the left side of the road. Haga was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where the surgery took place.
Haga’s mother, Delayne Griffiths Haga, told VeloNews that Haga suffered deep wounds in his chest, neck, chin and lip, in addition to the fractured bone in his face. The initial surgery, she said, repaired blood vessels that were damaged in the crash. She said doctors will wait until the swelling in his face subsides before operating on the fractured orbital bone.
“Chad was aware and responsive to questions prior to his surgery,” Griffiths Haga said. “His fiancé is planning to take care of him during his recovery, if possible.”
Griffiths-Haga said a CT scan showed no internal injuries or trauma to his brain. She said he is in stable condition.
