Jamis-Hagens Berman will welcome back the most successful rider in the team’s history when Juan José Haedo returns to the U.S.-based Continental squad in 2013.
“I’m familiar with the racing in the U.S. and excited to be back racing there,” said Haedo in a team release. “I know most of the guys in the team and I am excited as we will be a very strong team in 2013.”
Haedo was a top domestic sprinter for four years — three of them with Jamis’ predecessor, Colavita — before moving to the sport’s top level with Bjarne Riis at CSC. Haedo has since won stages in the Vuelta a España, Critérium du Dauphiné and Tirreno-Adriatico. He was fourth on the Champs Élysées in the final stage of the Tour de France in 2012.
“I know J.J. very well and have kept in touch frequently since he moved to Europe. After we finalized our sponsors for 2013, I spoke with him about this new project and the plans to grow the team and he liked the idea,” said team manager Sebastian Alexandre. “With J.J. on board, this is undoubtedly the strongest team that we have ever fielded. The team will be competitive in every race we enter and I hope to show it during all of the major UCI races in the U.S. next year.”
Haedo should bolster Jamis’ case for inclusion in the top American events like the Amgen Tour of California, Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah and USA Pro Challenge. The team has missed out on invitations in recent seasons. Haedo is a five-time stage winner at the Amgen Tour.
“I’m really looking forward to the major UCI events in the USA,” he said. “I would like to add to my tally of stage wins at the Tour of California. I’ve also heard great things about the Tour of Utah and the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado and hope that the team can earn invitations to these events. I’m motivated and confident that I can deliver wins for my new team.”
Formerly Jamis-Sutter Home, the team announced earlier this week that it had partnered with Washington-based law firm Hagens Berman and would work closely with its new sponsor’s elite development team.
Jamis president and CEO Carine Joannou said that Haedo would work closely with the company in product development.
“J.J. is a fantastic signing for Team Jamis on all accounts. His achievements on the bike speak for themselves,” she said. “It will be great to see a rider of J.J.’s caliber riding a Jamis bike. As one of the best and most powerful sprinters in the world, we’ll be able to use his feedback to help test a build better bikes for our customers.”
Jamis-Hagens Berman will make its 2013 debut at the Tour de San Luis in Argentina on January 20.
