Mattia Gavazzi (CSF) won a mass sprint in the second stage of the Settimana Ciclista Lombarda in northern Italy.
Gavazzi edged two of his compatriots in the 174km second stage, with Roberto Ferrari (De Rosa) crossing the line second and Alberto Loddo (Androni) sprinting to third.
Overnight leader Michele Scarponi (Androni) finished safely in the main pack to retain his overall lead. Scarponi won Tuesday’s opening prologue and holds a 16-second lead to Matteo Carrara (Vacansoleil) and 20 seconds to Przemyslaw Niemiec (Miche).
The 40th edition of the race continues Saturday with 125.5km third stage in a four-climb circuit course around Lumezzane. A rising finish should favor Scarponi, a winner here in 2004, to defend his jersey.
