Fuji-Servetto finds new sponsor

Spanish team Fuji-Servetto will ride on in the 2010 season thanks to a new title sponsor coming on board under its new name, Footon-Servetto. The team announced Tuesday the arrival of new title sponsor, Footon, a Swiss-based company specializing in foot insoles and other health care products. The news comes as the team’s future looked bleak.

The team announced Tuesday the arrival of new title sponsor, Footon, a Swiss-based company specializing in foot insoles and other health care products.

The news comes as the team’s future looked bleak.

The Spanish-registered team struggled in the wake of the devastating doping positives involving former riders Riccardo Riccó and Leonardo Piepoli, both of whom tested positive for the banned blood booster CERA during the 2008 Tour de France.

The doping scandals prompted longtime sponsor, Saunier Duval, to end its backing of the team. Bike sponsor Scott and Mexican beef company, American Beef, steeped in to keep the afloat in the second half of 2008.

Despite retaining its ProTour status with new sponsors Fuji and Servetto, the squad was kept out of this year’s Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, but won a court battle in CAS to gain its place in the Vuelta a España.

A team announcement Tuesday said the line up for next season will be released in the coming days.
