Florence, Italy, to host 2013 world road championships

UCI officials in Australia announced the decision Wednesday.

World cycling chiefs on Wednesday chose the Italian city of Florence as host of the 2013 world road race cycling championships.

It will be the first time the scenic Tuscan city will host the event. Florence beat rival bids from Genoa (Italy), Hooglede-Gits (Belgium) and Ponferrada (Spain).

Florence officials said the men’s elite road race will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2013 on a course that starts in Lucca before joining a 16.1 km circuit that will be raced a number of times.

The event will be held in Copenhagen in 2011 and the Dutch town of Valkenburg in 2012.
